Lancaster first gained its agreement as a market town and borough in 1193, but was given the status of a city very late in 1937. Many of the buildings situated in the center of the town and down St George's Quay date back to the 1800s.
Built during the time when ports had become one of the busiest hub for slave trade in UK. However, Lancaster could not sustain the role of a major port as the rivers started to silt up. Morecambe, Glasson Dock and Sunderland Point started to serve as Lancaster's temporary port.
Heysham is currently the town's main port. There has been long-standing debate going on to decide the character of the high capacity road to sort out Lancaster's traffic congestion which arguably stands as one of the prime issues of their local politics today.
