Tortoises are naturally tame creatures and can be kept as pets provided a few precautions are taken. Tortoises require a fair sized space as most of them grow to a large size, to move about and a backyard shaded by trees would be an ideal place for their habitat; if the tortoises are semi aquatic one would also have to build a tank.

Also one should be careful about the diet of the tortoise as most are herbivorous in nature and consume only plants and fruits while a few species are omnivorous requiring snails, worms and fish. One has to be careful while handling tortoises as they are shy creatures and withdraw in to their shell if they are handled roughly or picked up.

Some species of tortoises are better suited to hot climates like the Leopard and Sulcata tortoise while some like the Redfoot tortoise require a moderate environment and a water tank which should be cleaned regularly along with the tortoise to avoid contamination due to bacteria like salmonella.

I have had two desert tortoises in the past and they were wonderful "pets" for my children. We provided shade, water and gave them special treats once in a while of lettuce...Otherwise they ate the natural vegetation.
