When Did People First Drink Coffee?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Coffee first originated in the 9th century, in the highlands of Euthopia. The controversies regarding coffee can be traced back to the year 1511, in Mecca. It was in Egypt, that all the coffee houses and warehouses containing coffee were destroyed. This controversy began, since the word coffee is derived from the Arabic word, قهوة Qah'wa, which originally meant wine or liquior. However, due to its popularity, the first coffee shop was opened in the year 1475, in Constantinople, by Kiva Han. It was during this time that the Muslims introduced coffee in northern Africa, Persia, Turkey and Egypt.

Léonard Rauwolf, a German physican, was the first to express Coffee as "A beverage as black as ink, useful against numerous illnesses, particularly those of the stomach. Its consumers take it in the morning, quite frankly, in a porcelain cup that is passed around and from which each one drinks a cupful. It is composed of water and the fruit from a bush called bunnu."
