Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14th 1865, at Ford's Theater in Washington. He died the next day.
Booth entered the history books as the man who had killed a President. He was not captured until April 26th when he was found hiding in a Virginian tobacco barn. He refused to surrender and was eventually shot, after trying to escape from the barn which had been set on fire.
The reasons for Booth, who was actually a successful actor, wanting to kill the President are not recorded, but many believe that it was because he opposed the President's Emancipation Proclamation which promised freedom to the slaves of the southern states.
Booth had apparently planned to kidnap the President a month earlier and hand him over alive to the Confederate government. When this plan failed, he seemed to decide that only assassination would provide some assistance to the South, hence why he took such drastic action.
