From March to May 1954 the Vietminh besieged Dien Bien Phu in North Vietnam, two months later the French were defeated. The survivors were put into prison camps, another two months following that and armistice was signed and the french had agreed to leave as there had been 16 500 French troops at Dien Bien Phu but only 3 000 lived.
