It depends on how the DSL service is being 'presented' at your location by the provider.
In the UK, for example, I believe DSL is presented as a standard ethernet wall socket. You just need a standard ethernet cable, which goes from the socket to the networking port of your laptop. You might then need to do some network setup on your computer, or it might just work instantly. Your provider will be able to give you details on this. If you're lucky, they'll give you a CD to run on the PC to do it all automatically, or at least with a minimum of clicking on your part. If you're unlucky, they'll just send you some written instructions.
There's other options - routers and wifi being the main two - but you didn't mention them, so neither did I.
