    Honduras is a Central American country. It is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the south by El Salvador, Nicaragua, and the Pacific Ocean. It consist of 18 departments (similar to states) and its capital is Tegucigalpa. The official language of Honduras is Spanish. Honduras is considered to be one of the poorest countries in the Americas. It has a GDP per capita of only $2050 per year. The economy has continued to grow slowly but the distribution of wealth remains very polarized with average wages remaining very low.  Economic growth is roughly 5% a year, but many people remain below the poverty line. It is estimated that there are more than 1.2 million people who are unemployed. The rate of unemployment is 28%.  The overall population of Honduras is 7.1million people and a million people live in its capital.
