Where In The World Do You Find Marsupials?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Marsupials are found throughout Australasia and the Americas and they are among the most remarkable of all mammals. This is not only because they have an unusual system of reproduction, but also because of the way the group as a whole has diversified to exploit different habitats and different sources of food.

In total, there are 266 species of marsupial which are grouped into 18 families. They range in size from the tiny Formosan mouse opossum, with a body length of less than seven centimetres, to the red kangaroo, which may measure 2.7m or more from head to tail.

Some species are native to Central and South America, including the Woolly opossum and the Virginia opossum. The Virginia opossum is also found in parts of North America. However, the majority of marsupial species live in Australia and New Guinea, including the Tasmanian Devil, the Thylacine (although this may be extinct), the brush tailed phascogale and the crest tailed marsupial rat.
