Who Mined The Gold In Canada?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Several major mining companies are actively producing gold from Canada, including Placer Dome, Barrick and TVX Newmont Americas (TVXNA). Other major producers are Miramar Mining, Kinross Gold, Newmont and Cambior. Gold is also produced as a by product from most of the base metal mines in Canada. The merger between Barrick and Homestake produced one of the world's largest gold mining companies.

Gold was first discovered in Canada in 1866 by prospectors from California. As mines dried up, or became overcrowded prospectors moved on. Canada did not become a Confederation, until July 1, 1867. Gold was discovered by amateur prospectors, in August of 1866 at Eldarado, which is known as the Richardson Mine.  In 1966-67 the Madoc, Denbigh mines were discovered as gold was found in the rock of the Precambrian Canadian Shield for the first time.

In 1898, gold was discovered in Klondike, and continues to be found, in the local streams around the mine. The Klondike Gold Rush in Canada  occurred between 1898-99. Today Klondike is a popular vacation spot. Tourist pan for gold in the streams around the mine.

As the California Gold Rush drew prospectors from other territories so did the discovery of gold in Canada. Prospectors came searching for gold.

The world first turned its eyes to Canada's hidden treasures and gold- mines when Californian prospectors arrived in the present British Columbia. In the year 1858, Aborigines from the Fraser River Valley paid a visit to Hudson's Bay post and found chunks of gold mixed with sand of glacial streams and gravel. Few days later, hordes of prospectors arrived at the Fraser River, heralding the Caribou gold rush.

The discovery of metals in Canada prompted prospectors to wander across the country in search of the beckoning gold deposits. The gold rush in the Yukon towards the fag end of the 19th century and a diamond rush in the Northwest Territories at the start of the 21st century have always made prospectors smile northward. The setting up of the Canadian Pacific Railway uncovered rich mineral deposits on the Canadian Shield, where miners were attracted into the ores of Ontario and Quebec.
