How Do I Order A Birth Certificate?

    If the birth took place in England or Wales

    To order a birth you need to contact the General Register Office for England and Wales at the address below

    Births were first officially registered in England and Wales in what is called the September Quarter 1837. At this date it became compulsory to register births, marriages and deaths in the two countries.

    Registration in Ireland and Scotland has, historically differed from England and Wales .

    It is also possible to order birth certificates from the Register Office within the district that the birth took place. Some register Offices offer an online odering service.

    It is worth noting that there may be long delays when odering certificates from Register Offices which receive a high volume of requests, Liverpool is one such example.

    A standard certificate costs £7 ( September 2006)
