Islamabad or the 'City of Peace' is the capital of Pakistan. It lies at the foot of the Margalla Hills near Rawalpindi. It is a planned city which replaced Karachi as the capital of Pakista and was officially made the country's capital in 1967 while work on the city's buildings, streets and other facilities continued until the mid 70s. Internationally known architects; Gio Ponti, Edward Durell Stone, and Louis I. Kahn contributed to the city's design. Its construction began in 1961 and Rawalpindi located just 14 km south of Islamabad was made an interim capital till Islamabad was officially declared the country's capital.
The city is divided into eight zones, each characterised by its use. One zone is for government offices; others are for commerce, light industry, or residential areas. Evey zone has a green belt. There is also a national park that contains farms, gardens, and research institutes. A large area surrounding the city has been designated for future development. The capital gets water from the nearby Rawal Dam.
Islamabad is a modern city which presents a blend of traditional Islamic and contemporary architecture. Some of the notable buildings are the National Assembly Building, the Faisal Mosque, the Secretariat, and the University of Islambad. Its population according to the 1998 census is 524,500.

It's located within the Islamabad Capital Territory; this area in the past years was a part of the crossroads of the Punjab region and the North-West Frontier Province.
