Did Stalin Have A Grand Scheme To Conquer East/Central Europe At The End Of World War II?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Joseph Stalin did have some general ideas in terms of ways to conquer East Central Europe at the end of World War II, but they were hardly well-planned out schemes. In essence, there was no uniform, one-size-fits-all approach, but rather different plans geared towards different countries.

Initially, Stalin merely wanted to ensure that the region did not fall into the hands of Germany, or any other western power. He was not, at this stage, seeking ultimate power. Later, Stalin's policy changed and he decided that the region's government should be "friendly" to the Soviet Union. This did not mean direct control from Moscow, but it did mean that national Communist parties should be given priority in terms of forming governments.

Finally, in about 1946/1947, Stalin decided that the region would have to be subordinated, based on ideological grounds. This involved show trials, banning dissent, shutting down political parties and installing puppet regimes.
