What Does Comfit Mean?

Comfits basically are a kind of dried fruits or nuts, which are generally coated with sugar candy and often distribute during festive occasions. Usually in Belgium, almond comfits are handed out in small muslin bags to family and friends after a ceremony of baptism.

In Middle Eastern countries comfits are often served to guests at weddings. An ancient medieval recipe for comfits is based on anise seeds; they even recommend making comfits from fennel, caraway, coriander as well as from chopped ginger.

These aniseeds comfits appear to be an antecedent of contemporary aniseed balls. Comfits are quiet famous with people and are widely consumed.
