How To Pitch A Story?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Pitching a story to a newspaper, magazine or even a website starts with good research. Figure out who is the right person to make contact with. You may have to send a couple of enquiring emails first to find out who is the relevant editor. Making sure that your pitch gets to the right person obviously greatly helps its chances of succeeding!

Be familiar with the kinds of stories that have been published in the past. Identify what is important to the publication's audience. Pitch those stories the publication that connect with that particular publication's values.

Introduce yourself to the editor by stating your relevant writing experience and/or knowledge of your topic. Be specific in your pitch. Do not present a general topic, but a very specific idea. Tell the editor why the story is unique and make clear how it will connect with readers. Newspapers, magazines and websites want to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack. Demonstrate in your pitch that you are familiar with the unique identity of the publication and show how your story fits in.
