The flag of Mauritania consists of a green background with a crescent moon and star in the centre. The moon and star are golden in colour. The crescent moon is not angled like the ones found on the Turkish or the Red Crescent flags but horizontally placed like a cup. The Green symbolizes the colour of the religion of the majority of Mauritanians that is Islam. The crescent moon and star are also considered symbols of Islam. The colour combination of gold and green is believed to be pertaining to the concept of Pan-Africa.
Mauritania or the Islamic Republic of Mauritania is located on the western coast of Africa. To its north lies Morocco and Algeria, to the east of Mauritania lies Mali and to its south Senegal.
