Most midwives undergo a 32 month vocational training program, or an 18 month nurse conversion course (on top of the 32 month nurse training course). Thus midwives potentially could have had up to 5 years of total training.

There are two options to qualify for a career in midwifery: a three or four year diploma or degree programme in mid-wifery, or an 18-month top-up programme for Registered Adult Nurses. The Diploma programme entails 60 credits of study at level three, and the degree requires 120 credits. The latter obviously requires more time and research with a thesis and dissertation. It's possible to start with the diploma and 'top up' your studies later towards the degree. At some institutions, all students enter on the diploma programme and later decide whether to switch to the degree track. After successfully completing your studies you will receive a Registered Midwife Qualification.
Minimum requirements for the diploma course are five GCSE (or equivalent) A to C grades, including English Language, Maths and one science subject. Other qualifications that are accepted include: Double Award Vocational A Level, NVQ Level 3, BTEC National, and Access to Higher Education course.
