The novel, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is a story about the typical struggles of a Hispanic family.  It is a picture of the various problems that many Hispanic women face in society today such as domination by men, and the fact that women are viewed as objects and rarely valued for what they think and feel on the inside. Sandra Cisneros wrote this novel so that the reader understands the struggles and feelings of the Hispanic woman. Cisneros shows how Hispanic women struggle in a male dominated society. She shows that Hispanic women are judged by men based on their looks and appearance and that women put too much emphasis on what they man thinks about her. Esperanza is determined in the story to break free from the male dominated society and be her own person. Her main goal is to break away from the typical Hispanic society and be her own woman. She later wants to come back into her society and show women that there is much more than simple looks and appearance. She attempts to teach women to value their inner selves and beliefs and that if a man cannot accept her for who she really is and not because of the way she looks, then the man is not worth her time.
