    Muay Thai's derivation in Thailand can be traced reverse to the older Muay Boran ("very old boxing"). This was the form of unprotected combat used by Siamese armed forces in conjunction with Krabi Krabong, the weapon-based style. Eventually Muay Boran was separated to:

    • Muay Korat (North east) gave emphasis to strength. A practice in the vein of "Throwing Buffalo Punch" was used. It could purportedly overwhelm a buffalo in one blow.
    • Muay Lopburi (Central section) emphasized arrangements. Its brawny points were straight and argue against punches.
    • Muay Chaiya (South) emphasized attitude and security, as well as elbows and knees.
