What Is `diffusion`?

Answer Question

9 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Diffusion is defined as the spontaneous spreading of matter, heat, momentum or light, the movement of particles from higher chemical potential to lower chemical potential.

Some examples of this happening include when dried spaghetti is cooked and water molecules diffuse into the spaghetti strings.  This is a physical process rather than a chemical reaction that causes the strings to become thicker and more flexible.

Another example is where a helium balloon deflates slightly every day due to the helium atoms diffusing out of the balloon through its wall.  This is called effusion.

Another example is where carbon dioxide bubbles in soft drinks grow due to the diffusion of carbon dioxide molecules towards them.

Diffusion is the  movement of suspended or dissolved particles from a more concentrated to a less concentrated area. The process tends to distribute the particles more uniformly.

Diffusion is a physical process in which a substance moves from a region of high concentration out into regions of lower concentration. This sounds complicated, but its not when you think about it happening in everyday life. A good example of diffusion is the diffusion of food molecules in the air from a kitchen when dinner is being prepared. When cooking begins, the food molecules start to move outwards from the region of high concentration near the cooker and they reach other parts of the house and even the garden, letting everyone know its nearly time to eat.

Diffusion occurs because all particles in gases and liquids move about. This motion is called Brownian motion and is random. The individual particles and molecules vibrate and bounce around and off each other. The net effect is that molecules tend to spread out, rather than stay concentrated in one place.

Diffusion is affected by temperature. It is quicker at higher temperatures. This is because the molecules gain more energy as they get hotter, they move around more and so bounce away from each other more quickly.

A person rescued from a fire. There is a lot of smoke. Emergency personnel fit him with a oxygen mask. How do I sum that up to the effect of diffusion?
