In food acid has a sour taste, bases are bitter with some exceptions including coffee which is actually an acid. Also bases tend to feel more slippery. However, the most accurate way is to test the pH level using universal indicator, phenolphtalein, litmus paper, or bromthymol blue. Also if you dissolve a substance in water and the hydrogen content goes up then it's an acid.
