What Was So Different About Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Architecture?
Answers
Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1923)is perhaps the best known Scottish architect of all time. Two of his most famous buildings are the Glasgow School of Art and Hill House in Glasgow. Some of his influence is still discernible in many Glasow buildings.
His work is different because he adopted a holistic (sometimes referred to as homogenous) approach to buildings. So whereas most architects would design the exterior of a building, in other words its shell, Mackintosh would design elaborate and very decorative interiors, looking at the whole building and how the furniture would 'fit in' with the building and how it would all come together to provide a work of art, as oposed to just being a building which was fitted out.
Mackintosh was also a very capable artist and his collection of landscapes, sketches of textile designs and pictures were exhibited internationally and are still held in high regard today.
