Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

    The main types are:
-Open ("Where do you live?") where a wide range of answers is possible.
-Closed ("Are you German?") where only yes/no answers are possible.
-Indirect ("Could you tell me where the station is?") where the main message has the same word order as a sentence.
-Tags ("You live here, don't you?") generally used for checking or seeking confirmation.
-Rhetorical ("Do you want your children to eat rubbish?") where the listener is expected to agree with the speaker, not give information
-Declarative ("This is where you live?") grammatically identical to sentences, and often used to express surprise.
Reply ("I'm going on holiday" - "Where?") these consist of one or two words (when/what for etc) and are only used in answer to a previous statement.
-Requests ("You couldn't give me a hand, could you?") where a negative is used but a positve reply is expected.
