I Want To Leave My Job, But My Boss Says That I Need To Hand In A Month's Notice. Is That Correct?

Answer Question

You are only legally required to give a month's notice if you have a work contract, and this is written into it as part of the agreement. If there is no contract, then you can leave your job whenever you like, although it is normal courtesy to give some notice.

It may be important to take into consideration how you are paid - if you are working a week or a month "in hand", meaning that your wages or salary is paid in arrears, leaving suddenly may make it difficult to get that last payment, as the company may argue that you did not give notice.

It may be a good idea to negotiate some length of notice with your boss, and leave your job on good terms, as when you apply for your next job, the prospective employers may ask for a reference from your present employers.

If you are still uncertain, you may like to seek advice from your local Citizens' Advice Bureau.
