    I Would Like To Know What May Have Caused My Pet Mouse To Pass Away Unexpectedly?

    I took her to a vet last week as she seem lethargic, had gained weight & was breathing quickly. His exam revealed nothing wrong internally. Externally her fur was shiny & preened, her bottom clean & dry, no discharges from nose, mouth or eyes. He said rapid breathing can be stress related. Her habitat is a 10 gallon fish tank, she has a wheel, 2 houses, 1 couch, bedding & food from pet store, fresh veggies along with a water bottle. I clean the tank w/water & mild soap weekly. I feel awful, did I do something to cause this?

    Sounds like you took perfect care of your little friend, and gave him a life most mice only dream of : )  You didn't say how long you'd had him, but mice only live an average of about 2 years in captivity, and only about 3 months in the wild, so my guess is he beat the overall odds and had a great life.  Sometimes mice get tumors that make them look plump and happy even though they're sick... It's not something the vet would necessarily be able to detect before hand, and even if he had, there wouldn't have been anything he could have done to prevent the outcome... Whatever the reason, there's nothing you could have done to change it, sometimes things just die.

      No, you didn't do something to cause this. Odds are that the poor thing was probably just old. Sorry about it  dying. Clean the tank out real well, get a new one, and don't torture yourself about it, o.k. Hope this helps.
