    The National Glass Centre of Sunderland has everything that one could hope to see in the glass industry. It is a cultural and educational resource housed in a massive and spectacular glass and steel building. Every year more than 100,000 people visit this wonderful place.

    The purpose of the centre is to encourage artistic endeavours in the glass industry. With the growth of trade and commerce glass making too became established here with the Flemings brought over by the church to beautify the monastery, thus beginning an industry for which Sunderland is justly renowned today.

    Situated on the north bank of the river Wear the National Glass centre if dedicated to promoting glass in all its uses that is in design and technology and as a vehicle for artistic expression. Glass is a very common material and this beautiful material is used by the mankind since 5000BC for the daily needs, technological needs and to create objects of beauty that enhance our lives.

    The National Glass Centre is home to the Glass Department of the University of Sunderland while the International Institute for Research in glass is also located at the same site. This enables them to attract some of the world's greatest glass makers as well as train and educate new artists to the highest caliber.
