Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

James Michener began writing as a child. In the 1940s, in his early 20s, when he was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II, he wrote his first best-seller, "Tales of the South Pacific."

One of the stories, about the love affair between a U.S. Navy nurse and French planter is complicated by racism, when the nurse, Nellie Washburn, meets the man's children, whose mother is Polynesian. Nellie initially is appalled by the miscegenation, but gradually overcomes her prejudice.

The story was made into one of the most successful musicals in history by Rodgers and Hammerstein -- "South Pacific."

Michener went on to become one of the most successful novelists of all time, whose bestsellers  include "Hawaii," "Centennial," "Texas," "Alaska," "Mexico," " Caribbean," and "Space."
