There are several reasons why Shakespeare is regarded as the greatest English writer. In his lifetime he is credited with having written around thirty eight plays, a hundred and fifty four sonnets and several other poems. His plays are believed to be extraordinary, full of life and extremely rich. Though Shakespeare was recognized as a great writer from the first of his plays and was greatly appreciated during his lifetime his works as a writer have received tremendous adulation from every quarter after his death and over the years.
There is no doubt that the man was a genius, with talent and imagination far exceeding his contemporaries. His style of writing that was so rich had in some measure to do with the conditions that prevailed. In the Elizabethan era plays were rich affairs with lavish costumes, accompanying music and special effects. With modern tolls lacking a play writer had to rely more and more on the dialogues to create a dazzling effect.
