The term speed of sound is used to measure the speed within which sound waves can move. This could take place in either air or water, however most measurements are commonly referrred to as being in the air.

The speed of sound varies depending on temperature and humidity within the air. It is calculated using a very complex formula, but you can easily view typical speed of sound rates in differing temperatures here. Typically as a general view the temperature would be given as 15C which makes the speed of sound 761mph.
