How To Troubleshoot Hot Water Heaters?

My gas water heater won't stay lit

It's best if you were to replace the Thermocouple. That is the little stick looking thing that sits above your pilot light.

If it were actually working properly, it would stay lit.

My first visit to this site. Replaced the thermocouple $9.00 and 15 minutes. Pilot stays lit now. Thanks for the info and giving me my Saturday and hubby's sanity.

Burner comes on properly but then the flame goes to the burner orifice and burns from there.

Replaced the thermocouple and still the gas comes on for about 20 seconds and then dies down...replaced the whole burner assembly.
