Are There Any Legitimate Excuses For Drink Driving?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are no legitimate excuses for drink driving in the UK, or elsewhere. In Great Britain alone, over 100,000 people are caught each year. Those that are found to have consumed alcohol prior to driving may lose their permit for an entire year and they could find themselves with a criminal record.

These may sound like very tough consequences, but they are, in fact, reasonable if one takes into account the fact that over 3000 people are either killed or injured in drink driving related incidents in the UK every year.

When faced with these stiff penalties, many people do try to come up with excuses, the most common of which tends to explain this behaviour by saying that the driver has had a meal with a small drink and feels fine. The UK Department of Transport maintains that a meal, or not, alcohol does still effect one's judgement and perceptions.

The best advice is really the simplest: if you have had any amount of alcohol, just call a taxi, or get a friend who did not consume alcohol to drive you home.
