    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    Typically, older women wear darker/more intense shades of red because as they age their coloring becomes thinner. A rosy cheeked young woman has a natural complexion that doesn't need much rouge.

    Also, on an older woman the lipstick makes the lips look fuller (younger, more full of life) as they tend to thin with age.

    ..Or at least that's how it was explained in my ex-girlfriend's Cosmo magazine.
