Where Is The Kingdom Of Belgium Located?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Belgium is one of the so-called "Low Countries" of western Europe (sometimes called "Benelux": Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg). It is located on the North Sea coast; its neighbours are France to the west and south, Luxembourg to the south-east, Germany to the east and the Netherlands to the north-east.
The name Belgium derives from the Celtic tribes, the Belgae, who were already living there in Roman times; when Romans invaded the area they named it "Belgica." For most of its history, Belgium has been dominated, invaded or annexed by its more powerful neighbours, especially Germany and France, and wasforced to unite with the Netherlands in 1814. In 1831 it achieved independence under Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, and went on to become a major colonial power in the Congo (central Africa: now Zaire.)
Belgium was invaded by Germany in both world wars; today it is a peaceful country and, despite its small size (30,518 square km) is densely populated with over 10 million inhabitants. Its capital city, Brussels, is the headquarters of the European Union.
