Can You Tell Me Some Interesting Facts About The Brain And Nervous System?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The spinal cord is a column of nerves. It is about 40cm long and runs inside the backbone from the brain to the base of the back. Nerve cells are the longest cells in the body. Some of the nerve cells that connect the toes with the spinal cord are about 1 metre long.

The average weight of a human brain is 1.4 kg. The average brain is 140 mm wide, 167 mm long and 93 mm high.  Men tend to have larger and heavier brains than women. This is just because, usually, men are generally bigger than women - it does not mean there is any difference in intelligence. Some of the most intelligent people in history had smaller than average brains. The weight of the brain also changes with age: an adults brain is 3 times as heavy as a newborn baby's brain but,  after the age of 20, the brain loses 1g in weight every year.
