I Want To Be A Good Writer. What Tools Do I Need Or Should I Use?

Answer Question

First off, it depends on what kind of a writer you want to be.  Do you wish to write non-fiction (fact) or fiction?  If you wish to write poems, all you really need is pen and paper, but a good word processing package will save you time and allow you to edit as you go.  A great dictionary will help you use words correctly and a great thesaurus (a book of words that have similar or alike meanings to other words) will help you develop the range of your vocabulary.

If you wish to write plays or films or tv, or for radio, perhaps a programme like Final Draft (available for Mac and PC users) would be a great way to ensure that you are formatting everything correctly, it also has handy tools to help your creativity.  Remember poorly formatted work, will never get read, it just looks bad.

Good answer, Epictetus! I'd like to add that poor grammar and spelling are also detrimental to how writing is perceived.
