Where Does 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' Come From As Used By Ernest Hemingway?

My husband and I disagree about its origins I think it was originally from a John Donne poem, he thinks it is from the bible.

It is a continuation of the very ingredients of what we are still attempting to explain and understand to ourselves...what is our purpose for our very limited exposure/interaction with Being!

John Donne's observation of each & every human and in an expanded conciousness all living creatures are "all part of the main....No man is an island" the entire accumulation, the actual sum total is diminished when a little of a part of the main is lost or dies, that even the loss of one cell or one person's life...does in fact lessens the whole ball of wax!

Don't ask but understand, when a passing of an individual occurs, whether you know it or not or have been quite interactive with that person, we are in our common quest, whatever that is, you, we are not as strong, the size of our big collective 'footprint', is measurabile smallier.....the Ultimate Spirit will have to track a more difficult trail, necessary to track wherever we are currently 'wandering' off to!

As Virtuous (People) pass mildly away, and whisper for their souls to go...................................
I don't believe the Old Testament would worry for the entire sum total of humunity or Life in that manner. It was more for the most part...us against them...and here is our Avenging Force!  (I am cutting the air line with that quip)
