Which Boxer Was Known As ´The Ragamuffin´?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Lloyd Honeyghan the Jamacian-born British boxer was a two-time world champion, wining the WBC, WBA and IBF world welterweight title in 1986.  It was this victory that coined his nickname, ´The Ragamuffin´ when the then world champion Don ´The Cobra´ Curry asked who famously asked who the ragamuffin was just before his title defense against Honeyghan.

In one of the great upsets of recent times, Honeyghan destroyed the man thought to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world at that time, knocking the champion out in the 7th round.

After losing to Jorge Vaca, Honeyghan regained the title a year later, becoming at the time only the second British boxer to ever accomplish the feat (after Ted ´Kid´Lewis).

Personal problems seemed to ensure that Honeyghan would turn the hype into fact when he was seemingly going off the rails, but this proud warrior of the ring has managed to turn his life around and is currently working as a boxing promoter.
