Who Was The Democratic President Who Was In Office Prior To Bill Clinton?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

With Clinton coming to power it marked twelve years since the Democrats has a man at the top. It had been the 39th President of the United States and Nobel Peace Laureate Jimmy Carter who had been a democratic President to have been elected president prior to Bill Clinton. In several ways it marked the end of an era of Republicans.

Before Clinton the Presidency had been occupied for one term by George Bush and for two terms by Ronald Regan before Bush. Carter had been elected President in 1977 and lost the re-election in part because of the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Ayatollah Khomeini had called the American embassy in Tehran a den of spies and Iranian students had stormed the building taking the entire inmates hostage. They were released 444 days later on the day Carter left office.
