The Centrosaurus is a dinosaur whose name means 'pointed lizard'. It had a curved horn that protruded from its snout. Yet its name was derived from another distinctive feature – a 'frill' around its neck. It was a kind of raised collar made of bone. The frill was scallop-shaped with points all around it. The bone was hollow, which was nature's clever way of easing the weight that the hefty creature had to carry. Many dinosaur skeletons have some hollow bones for this reason.
The Centrosaurus lived in what is now Canada, in the area surrounding the Red Deer River. It was about six meters in length and 2 meters in height. It existed 76 to 74 million years ago and was a herbivore, or plant-eater. Thousands of Centrosaurus skeletons have been found in Alberta Canada, leading scientists to believe that a flood or other natural disaster wiped out a large number.
