What Is A Bytes?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A BYTE is a "chunk" of data 8 Bits long. One Byte = 8 bits.
A Bit is a digital signal represented by a 1 for on or a 0 for off.

Now with all of that being said, a Byte is that information that composes a character. A character is any letter from A to Z, 0 to 9, or all the funky characters such as !, @, # on a keyboard. It takes 8 bits to make up a character. All of this goes back to the days of NIXIE tubes that spelled out each letter. The letter i took the least number of bits and B the most. All lettering was block type so to make a B you had to draw a horizontal bar at the top, middle and bottom of the box. That makes up 3 bits, Then there were 2 verticals bars on the left and 2 verticals bars on the right. That makes up 4 plus the 3 horizontal bars =7 bits. The 8th bit was to signal the beginning or end of a character.
