These days lasers are used prolifically in the home. They have shed their 'super ray gun' image and now crop up in cd and dvd readers and writers. They will probably be in your computer as well as your home entertainment system.

Laser is and acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission Radiation. Basically it is a device that is capable of producing a long beam of light capable of travelling vast distances without dispersion.
The uses of lasers include communications because a laser beam can carry far more information than a radio wave. They can be used for cutting, welding and drilling. They are useful in tracking satellites and have many applications in biological research and surgery. They also read the bar code on your goods at the supermarket checkout.

Many substances which have atoms that can be put in an excited state may be used a laser material. Synthetic ruby crystal was first used in 1966. It gives a pulsed, high-power output.
