    If, you are referring to cricket, I can answer your question, however if you are referring to another sport you will need to let us know. You did not mention the name of the sport, to which you were referring in the question.

    The very first tests were "test cricket"  played on March 17, 1877 in England.  Actually, cricket teams existed as far back as 1550 in part of Kent, Sussex, and Surrey. However, cricket has been traced as far back as 1300. Laws began to be formed around 1774 in England.

    The first Ashes matches between Australia and England took place in 1882 when Australia won the Ashes for the first time.  England regained the Ashes the following year.
