Which Series About A Vengeful Wife Won The 1986 BAFTA For Best Drama?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

"The Life and Loves of a She-Devil" was a hugely popular BBC series based on a novel by Fay Weldon. It starred Julie T Wallace as a spurned wife who exacts a hideous (and blackly comic) revenge on her unfaithful husband (Dennis Waterman) and his mistress (Patricia Hodge.) The series was so much admired that it even beat Dennis Potter's acclaimed "Singing Detective." Actors, direction and dialogue (most of it directly from Weldon) were all admired, but what lingered longest in the memory was Wallace's performance, complete with moustache, hairy moles and (when plotting evil) glowing red eyes. Several other Weldon adaptations followed on other channels, including "The Cloning of Joanna May," but the success of "She-Devil was never repeated. The novel was filmed in 1989, with Roseanne Barr and Meryl Streep as the wife and mistress, but although the film had some success it was never as highly regarded as the TV series.
