Women visited camps and cleaned them out. They sanitized the camps. This made the number of deaths from disease decrease, most people fell ill from the filthy camps they walked in their own urine. Also, women nursed the wounded soldiers and made them food.

Women played a monumental role in the American Civil War.  While their men were out to fight for their respective armies, women contributed a great deal in their absence by assuming their roles of running the businesses and along with that assuming their own roles of managing the household and the children.  One of the practical and most useful roles that women played during the Civil War was that of nurses.

Every single day of the war, thousands of soldiers were wounded on both sides and women contributed a great deal towards healing those soldiers playing their part as volunteer nurses.  Some of the most notable woman figures in the American Civil War were Elizabeth Blackwell, who was the first woman doctor of the United States.  Along with her, Dorothea Dix, who had later worked for prison reform also contributed hugely towards nursing the wounded soldiers, serving as the nursing in charge of the Union Army.  Some other women who were worthy contributors in the American Civil War were Sojourner Truth, Clara Barton and Harriet Tubman.
