How Do Chefs Carry Their Knives Abroad?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

When flying, chefs can carry their knives abroad as long as they are not carried as hand luggage.  This means that they have to put their knives in a suitcase.  They should also notify the check in people that there are knives in the suitcase, because these days security is very tight and it is better to be upfront, rather than cause a security scare.
When travelling by sea, this is not so much of an issue, because the security is not so tight.  Travelling by Eurostar is again easier, because baggage is not checked as much.
However, carrying a set of knives is a risky business, in case they get stolen (professional chefs' knives are very expensive) and their loss will be a blow to the chef, so ideally they should just be left at home and a set 'borrowed' whilst abroad.
