In Which Situations Could Electric Shocks Be Used To Cure People?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In the year 1938, the team of U.Cerlatti and L. Bini in Rome used electric shocks for the first time.  Later on they recommended the following treatment for conditions like manic-depression and schizophrenia (which, in literal comprehension, refers to the splitting of the mind).

Electric shock treatment is also called electro-convulsive therapy and is also sometimes used with people who are undergoing mental illnesses, which, in turn, are characterized by the main symptom of severe depression.

The operational part of electroconvulsive therapy involves the placement of two electrodes on each temple of the patient and consequently passing alternating currents through the head of the patient.  As a result, the person loses his consciousness in an instant and a convulsion of the body ensues as another after-effect.  However at the end of the treatment, it is claimed that the person is in a much calmer and more balanced state than he was before the electric shock treatment.
