Can You Help Me With A Pet Dog Related Issue?

My grandfather had a boxer dog and he had heartworms really bad. The dog passed away this morning and I wanted to know if the heartworms could have caused his death. He coughed alot and could hardly get around real good, he was old also. Can you help me?

Yes the heartworms could and probably did cause his death.  Heartworms are actual white, worms that live in the heart and pulmonary artery.  Heartworm disease results in heart failure and eventual death if untreated.  Coughing is a sign of heart disease.  Heartworm disease can be treated and it is not hard to "save" a dog with heartworm disease.  The majority of dogs treated for heartworm do very well, though the treatment is intense.  Heartworm disease is also a preventable disease-please contact your veterinarian to discuss heartworm preventative for any other dogs your family owns.

Heartworms was most likely the cause of his death.  The dog being old really didn't help much either.  It's really hard to save a dog from dieing once it has heartworms.
