What Is The Story Of Antigone, Daughter Of Oedipus?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

After her father died, Antigone returned to his kingdom of Thebes. There she found that there had been a rebellion against the new king, her uncle Creon. Her brother Polynices had taken part in the uprising, and had been killed. His body was thrown outside the city walls and left there; it was forbidden to offer burial rites to anyone who had fought against Creon. Antigone begged to be allowed to give her brother a proper burial, but Creon refused; crimes against the state must not be condoned. She disobeyed him, secretly going outside the city and sprinkling her brother's body with earth in an attempt at a funeral rite. She was punished by being walled up alive in a cave, where she hanged herself. Both Antigone's tragedy and that of her father Oedipus are dramatised by the Greek poet Sophocles, who depicts her as a heroic individual battling against a repressive state. Both plays are still being performed today.
