Where Were The First Afro-Asian Games Held?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The very first Afro-Asian Games were held in Hyderabad, southern India in October 2003.  Algeria is to host the 2007 games.
There were eight categories of sport contested, namely swimming, boxing, football, tennis, weightlifting, athletics, hockey and shooting.  These categories are similar to the Olympic Games.

The Games involved around 120 countries, including some which are currently experiencing troubled times, for example Afghanistan, Iran, Rwanda  and Zimbabwe.  The Games also involved some Commonwealth countries which used to be part of the British Empire.  An interesting aspect of the Games is that they involved countries with different faiths and were not 'muslim' games or 'christian' but inter-faith.  Each faith was respected and the Games were viewed as a success by the organisers.
The organisation of the Games was undertaken by the Government of India, the government of Andra Pradesh, the Indian Olympic Associaton and the Afro-Asian Games Council.
