Here's a concrete example: My sister was divorced several months ago. Her husband wanted the divorce. She changed her last name back to her maiden name. She told me that she wanted to honor our deceased father and take the name of someone who loved her all of his life. I really liked that. I imagine it helps her emotional well being by making her feel just a bit more in control; and very satisfied with herself for making a great decision.
