If You Received A Stimulus Check In 2008 ,Will It Be Deducted From Your Income Tax Refund ?

Answer Question

16 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

It will be deducted from your tax refund. I just concluded my taxes and my refund was less the stimulus check amount. In my opinion I find that it BS that it worked out this way. It seems that that detail was tucked away from the forefront of details giving initially by the government.

I believe it will be, you should talk to a tax office about it, or call the IRS about it, that is your safest bet. Hope this helps, good luck. Could you let me know please? Thanks if you do.

I can tell you that it is deducted!!  I jsut completed my taxes along with my girlfriend's taxes for 2008 and it asked did you receive a stimulus payment and if so what was the amount and then you hit next to proceed to the next question and watch your federal refund go down that exact amount!!!

The government can keep their interest free stimulus "loan" check.   Cause that's exactly what it was a interest free loan that you will pay back when you file your 2008 taxes!!!!!

I am also having this problem, i am useing turbo tax and i normally get about 800 back. Once i click that little button about how much i recieved for the rebate i end up oweing 22$ not even getting anything back. I called the IRS directly and they said NO the rebate DOES NOT affect your 2008 tax return. Also she informed me that alot of the online programs are deducting it and then adding it at the end, but here i am still oweing 22$. TT says that they are automatically adding it for those that did not recieve a refund check, but something still seems horriblely wrong becuase i should still get something back. I am doing alot of research on this, have seen both answers but straight out of IRS lady mouth that it DOES NOT affect your 2008 returns. Who knows may be the goverment is lying again.

Yes it will, my brother filed for income tax this year and they retained 600 dollars to see if he got a stimulus check last year but like he didn't he has to wait a week to get his 600 back

According to the IRS letter received you are not supposed to be taxed on the 2008 stimulus check.  It states clearly that you will not be required to report this as income on your 2008 taxes.
So it sounds like the software that people are using is causing this to be income and adjusting the amount owed accordingly,

Why would anyone want to receive this if they are are going to pay back money they never had in the first place?  I never really owe taxes or owe very little.  I didn't sign up for a loan!

This does appear to be true when I did my tax esitmator on HR Block's website.  It deducts the $1200 we received from the refund so now we owe money!  Details, details!

I just got my taxex done and my refund was less my stimulus. This is absolutley a crock. I have a child in catholic high school and that money was for tuition. This is bull!!! So the answer is yes, our stimulus checks that we got last year most definately get deducted from your refund this year

        From FackCheck.ORG

Q: Is the economic stimulus payment taxable?
More than 130 million taxpaying households will be eligible for economic stimulus payments in May 2008. Is this considered taxable income?
        A: No.
Like most things involving the IRS, the 2008 stimulus payments generate a lot of questions, details, exceptions and paperwork. On the face of it, the idea is simple: If you file your 2007 taxes with at least $3,000 of taxable income, you will be eligible for a minimum payment of $300 (and a maximum of $600). Those with high incomes may not receive a payment, or may get a lower amount. But that doesn't eliminate the IRS' need for a multi-part Frequently Asked Questions list.

The answer to this one, at least, is fairly clear. The payment is not included in your tax refund check, but it is not taxable income. You won't have to pay taxes on it in 2008, and it will not reduce your 2008 refund. The IRS does recommend keeping a copy of the official notice detailing the amount of your payment – for your records, of course. Would you expect anything else?

I called the IRS today and they said that people do not need to re-pay the stimulus check amounts ($600 or $1200) back to them. They already had calls about this and there is nothing to worry about.

To all the above comments.......It absolutely does!! And that's not right. Everyone was under the impression it was free and clear. NOT!!! It stated on the IRS site it was NOT coming out of your refund and would not affect our refund at all. We just filed our taxes....and our refund is less the stimulas check. Now no where on their web site can I find it now. Our tax prepare told us we could not claim 2 of our 4 kids because we got the max on our stimulas checklast year. Not only am I mad I don't understand!!!
